The Story of the Shepherd Boy

At the center of the enchanting rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His existence was mostly pure, simple, and honest. His here primary duty was mainly to look after his herd of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the gales among the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant companions. Day upon day, looking out for his charges instilled in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. During one such occasion out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome plan.

Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One day he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but discovered no beast.

The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a few days more. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the herd. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.

The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
